Sermon: Light of the World

11/29/09 “The Light of the World”

Witness of Scripture by Pastor Massar:
John 8:12, Matthew 5:14-17, Ephesians 5:14
• Jesus Christ said these words at the feast of the Tabernacle
• The people celebrate that in the desert God came to them as cloud by the day and fire during the night
• They saw God as Light
• Psalm 2:7:
• Isaiah 69:
• Job 29:3:
• Revolutionary Statement made by Jesus
• The people were astonished and asking, “who do you think you are?”
• The question is, who do you think he is?
• Mathew 5:14-17: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
• Jesus Christ said that we are the light of the world
• Ephesians 5:14: “for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
• Last chapter talks to baptism
• Jesus Christ calls us to be the light
• What are we doing with it
• John 3:16-21: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.
• God isn’t condemning us, but offering us to come into the light

Sermon: Light of the World
• There’s an edge to Christmas
• Who is Jesus to you?
• Got to learn to deal with darkness
• We haven’t learned to deal with the darkness
• We live in the light
• There is a darkness we don’t want to see so we flood ourselves with artificial light
• Our calling is to be the light in the darkness, and we cant do that in here
• We’re called to go into the darkness
• We’ll never get the keys to the Kingdom in the artificial light
• Take the light we have here to the world out in the darkness
• Bring God’s good news to someone desperate for it
• It means coming out of our comfort zone
• Jesus came to change the world
• Jesus said “I am the Light of the World”
• What will you do with that light?
